Week 2

I have always thought math was a form of art. Math is used in a lot of graphics, for example, ratios, geometry, and simple basic math. In professor Vensa's lecture, she mentions that a lot of art majors hate math, but they use math on a daily basis whether they like it or not. Computers are what connect math and art. She also mentions how artist use horizontal lines to get the realness and depth of paintings and she uses the Mona Lisa for example. The Golden ratio gives the painting its beauty and  symmetry. Leonardo Da Vinci studied perspective and he used artificial and natural perspectives.

Leonardo Da Vinci created this drawing and it influenced so much art in the 20th century. It was created in 1847 that shows a male drawing and was used as a symbol of art and science.

 Figure 2: Fractals

Fractals use math in its art. It uses the formula z=z^2+c. The Mandelbrot Set is the most popular fractal. There are a variety of different shapes and sizes of fractals. Some of them can be compared to nature. For example, trees, rivers, lakes, galaxies, and waterfalls.

  1. I agree with you that artists use math on a daily basis even though they may not necessarily like it. Especially in today's age of advanced technology, artists rely on computers to create innovative works of such as fractals. The equation you provided for the Mandelbrot Set may look simple, but the calculation is actually impossible to do by hand, as we need computers to help us repeat the calculation thousands of times, constantly feeding the answer to the start. Why do you think artists are interested in creating these fractals that resemble patterns in nature? To me, it doesn't seem like they are trying to portray nature in a realistic way. Would you consider fractals as abstract art?

  2. Hi Rachel! I think that it is pretty cool you have always believed math is a form of art. Before taking this class I never considered math to have such an influential impact on art. I always knew math had some part to do with art but not to the extent I now know it does from the information in this class. I agree with you, most art majors do not enjoy math so it is funny that they use math to create their art one way or another. I agree with you that computers connect math and art, especially present day. Computers have such a heavy influence on our generation even if it is not used for math or art. However, computers do connect math and art, allowing artist to fulfill their potential.

  3. I like the way you brought up the concept of the Golden Ratio and how it connects mathematics and art, especially how it's reflected in Da Vinci's artwork. It's also very interesting that you used fractals to explain the connection, I myself find it to be a very intriguing idea.
